A Visit from The Detection Club

News that the BBC is creating a crime solving television series centred on the early years of The Detection Club, brings to mind the visit to the Ngaio Marsh House by Martin Edwards and his wife Helena Shanks early last year. Martin is the current president of the Detection Club, which was established in 1930 by a group of British mystery writers, among them Agatha Christie and Dorothy L Sayers. The oath of the invitation-only club was written by its first president GK Chesterton [Do you promise that your detectives shall well and truly detect the crimes presented to them, using those wits which it may please you to bestow upon them and not placing reliance on nor making use of Divine Revelation, Feminine Intuition, Mumbo-Jumbo, Jiggery-Pokery, Coincidence or the Act of God?] and presumably uttered by Dame Ngaio when she was inducted into the club in 1974.
